My Rating: ★★★★☆

Book Summary:

When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

My Thoughts:

I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about this book. However, I’ve got to say that I absolutely LOVED this book. It dove right into the action. It was fast-paced and believable. And the characters were amazing. Finally, a female lead that actually has a brain! Wow!

The main character: Ileni is a sorceress with fading magic. But guess what? She doesn’t complain. She doesn’t whine. She just makes the most of it. She was an amazing character; rebellious, strong-willed, and does what needs to be done.

The romance: Loved it! No love triangle. No insta-love. It’s light and builds up in a believable way. After all, the love interest (Sorin) is an assassin. They’re trained to kill others and die for a noble cause. No time for love there.

The setting: The only fault. It’s a bit confusing and even at the end, all I knew that it took place in a cave. I didn’t know why the assassins were there or even some explanation about the magic used.
